Tell me about yourself and the shop
I grew up in Orange County, in Cyprus, which is near Long Beach, so it's North Orange County, not the South Orange County you see on TV. I met my husband, Steve, and we had my first son, David. I went full term not knowing anything was wrong with David. The day before he was born, it became clear that there were some issues, so they brought me in and induced. We had this tiny baby that weighed only four pounds and had just two fingers on his left hand. They told us that David will probably be a vegetable and that we needed to come to terms with that. We were devastated. I remember both of us were just sitting on my hospital bed just sobbing. I remember thinking one of us needs to pull it together. In that moment, I remember saying, "We don't know what the future holds, no one can say that this is what David will be." Long story short...we absolutely fell in love with David. He has what is called Cornelia De Lange Syndrome. Usually they don't like to be touched, but David loves to be held—he's a total cuddle bug. He's had multiple major surgeries since, but we found out that David is a pretty tough little guy. Despite all of his challenges, he's determined and feisty. Eighteen months later, my second son, Matthias, was born.

A couple years later, we found out a church in San Luis Obispo needed a new pastor, so my husband took over as pastor, and we moved north. I was working in special education and doing in-home therapy with toddlers with special needs. With my two babies at home, one with severe special needs, it felt like I was doing the same thing at home that I was doing at work. I needed to break it up and do something different, and wanted to spend more time with my boys. I already had the jewelry business, but it was more of a hobby back then. But we thought we could really build something through my designs. So I quit my job and started approaching local boutiques about the jewelry. I stated blogging and found out people were really interested in what I was making. It was all very low-tech, but after Steve's friend built an official Web site, it just exploded. We were at the forefront of of a handmade jewelry movement, customized pieces where you could have your kids name on it, for example. It was super organic and grassroots. It's come a long way since then and is continuing to grow daily.

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
The inspiration behind the Summer Line is finding beauty. Life can seem dark and broken, but there is beauty to be found. Each piece is inspired from the seemingly insignificant things that bring so much beauty and warmth. There is an artisan collection as well as a classic collection— both of which we couldn't be more excited about. What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I would say stay connected! In the blog world, there are always great deals being offered and giveaways being hosted. There are some fabulous blogs that feature the newest deals -- once you find them, add them to your RSS feed and you will stay in the loop.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
Thrift! Thrift! Thrift! I have found some AMAZING pieces at local thrift shops. It takes some searching, but it's so fun when you find that unique gems!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Right now, it's the beauty in the brokenness necklace. It so reflects my heart and the core of what Lisa Leonard Designs stands for. Life is imperfect, but that's what makes it beautiful. I'm overwhelmed by the stories I have heard about finding strength in being broken since we've launched it. Definitely my top pick right now.

Tell me about Happily Ever Borrowed. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
I have three older sisters, and from the age of 12, I was helping to plan their weddings. When I was in college and designing bridal gowns, my one sister asked me to make hers. That was far too much pressure for me, but I offered to help shop with her. When I saw the poor quality and construction of the cheaper gowns, I was horrified. All women deserve to wear quality products on their wedding day. We were also astonished at the high prices of veils, headpieces and jewelry. After spending their entire budget on their dress, most women forget that they need to accessorize as well! This is one of the most common instances where brides exceed their budget. My sisters begged me to find a solution. I let the idea sit for quite a while, but after my third sister got married, the idea started to materialize.

What has the response been like? What's your most-rented item?
The response has been wonderful! We've serviced over 200 weddings to date, and we just keep getting busier! Our most popular item has to be the Isabella Cuff by Enchanted Atelier. It's totally gorgeous and adds a vintage touch to your wedding accessories.

What are some wedding trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite wedding trends overall?
We're definitely seeing a huge trend with statement pieces. Where brides were being quite subtle with their accessories for a few years, we're now seeing a movement towards large statement necklaces and cuffs. We also LOVE the feather trend for weddings overall. They can add a really soft but trendy touch to an ensemble.

What are some things people should keep in mind when planning for their big day?
Just remember the reason you're there: To enjoy the day and marry your best friend. Let others sweat the small stuff for you!

What is your favorite item in Happily Ever Borrowed and why?
That's like choosing my favorite child! I just can't! But, I really do love our new Sophie Petite by Enchanted Atelier. It can be worn as a necklace, headpiece and belt. I LOVE the versatility of being able to change your look with just once piece throughout your wedding day.

Tell me about your shop. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Bow+Arrow Art was a long time coming, I think. I've been filling the margins of every notebook I've ever owned since I was big enough to hold a marker :) My mom and husband finally convinced me to sell some of my designs last year. It was hard to think of my doodles as "art" but it has been so fun to share them! You can read a little more about it here.

What are some of your favorite design trends?
Well I loooove how imperfect is beautiful in a lot of trends these days. From hand-written typography to vintage furniture, people are finding value in the old and flawed. It makes my heart so happy that people will buy my cards and prints because they're original and reflections of me rather than a perfect cookie-cutter copy!

What's your #1 piece of design and style advice?
I'm not good at offering advice...and I don't consider myself to be particularly stylish. I say be you and find the people who love YOU.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
I genuinely think that confidence is the most beautiful accessory there is. Find something to love about what you wear and rock it with pride. It doesn't have to be expensive, and it certainly doesn't need to be what everyone else is wearing. My favorite outfits originate from $4 skirts at the Goodwill, but they make me feel sassy, and I feel really good about saving money and not contributing more waste by buying brand new clothes!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
This is my current fave. Mostly because I'm madly in love with the old hymn it comes from and I came up with this design while daydreaming about a tattoo I'd like to get :) However, this is my close runner-up because it's like a little pep talk every time you see it!

So tell me a bit about your shop and the inspiration behind its launch.
Paper-Treats is a paperie and design studio that showcases my work. I love to dream up designs for invitations, cards and all sorts of paper goods. When I got married, I loved designing all of the little details for my wedding from the invitations to the table numbers. Soon after, a friend asked me to design her wedding invitations. Before I knew it, more people were looking for wedding invitations. This sparked Paper-Treats. I recently launched a greeting card line when I realized that I struggled to find the perfect cards in stores.

Where do the ideas for your designs come from?
My greeting card designs are inspired by things that I find in nature, design blogs, magazines and on Pinterest. I carry a little sketchbook with me at all times where I doodle down inspiring ideas that I see. My one-of-a-kind designs are inspired by the person that requests them. I like to learn about my clients before I begin to design. Through a series of design concepts, we come up with the ideal solution for them. Sometimes the bride isn't sure what she wants. I look at this as an adventure instead of a challenge. I love to gather and share inspiration with them so that they can tell me what they see and like.

What's your favorite part of owning your own shop? What has surprised you the most?
My favorite part of owning my own shop is using my imagination. I love to be creative and just have fun trying to imagine what people want. It feels really great to take something from concept to reality; for me, it's really about the journey as much as the final product.

What is your advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I think the more you browse, the smarter the shopper you will be. You'll start to recognize who really cares about their craft. Ultimately, the best deals are when you find items that give you the most pleasure for your dollar. If you appreciate great design and can get it for a fair price, then everyone wins!

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
This is a really tough question...I have favorite bits and pieces of each project. If I had to pick, I would say my wedding suite for Dana & Colin. I loved working with them. Dana was so open to any and all ideas. She was so excited throughout the entire process. We pulled inspiration from everywhere. Each piece is so unique but still works together with the other pieces. This project let me be a fine artist and a designer. I created a custom font style for their names by hand and then brought it to the computer. Seeing everything together -- from the folded invitation, stamp, post card, etc. -- really makes me smile!

Tell me about Modern Edge. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Modern Edge caters to young women who love to express who they are through clothing. The inspiration behind Modern Edge started when I realized most women in their 20s dress not according to their age. They do not know how to break away from wearing the boring t-shirt-and-jeans combo. I've always had great taste in fashion and others always complimented me on my style. So I decided to open my own online shop. Modern Edge stands for classy, sexy and edgy -- a style that is above all others. Modern Edge is fairly new, but I feel it will quickly catch on and be a huge inspiration to women all over!

What are some trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite fashion trends?
Some of our favorite trends are bodycon dresses and a lot of mint! Mint is such a popular color right now, and for good reason! It’s such a fun and bright color, not to mention flattering. Bodycon dresses are perfect for the warmer weather and are a great, simple way to dress up.

What are some things people should keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?
One thing to keep in mind is what outfit you plan to wear the jewelry with. A common mistake people make is buying jewelry just because it looks cute, and then they realize it doesn't go with any of their outfits! It’s always good to step outside your comfort zone and try something new, but it probably won’t get worn if you have nothing to go with it!

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
One of the best ways to look chic for less is to spice up an outfit with a new statement piece (like a cute pair of shoes or a fun jacket) that you can mix and match with basic items you already have in your closet. It’s a great way to give new life to your everyday outfits!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Right now, one of our favorite pieces in the shop is our chiffon peep toe heels. They are perfect for summer, day or night, and they are one of our bestsellers (did we mention that they also come in mint?). They go great with basically anything: dresses, skirts or even jeans!

Guest Post: 3 tips for a rainy-day wedding

Regardless of where you live, the weather can be a very unpredictable thing. When you are planning for a wedding, you will hope to have the best weather possible for your special day. Unfortunately, weather is something that is out of your control, and you cannot predict in advance whether it will rain on your wedding day. Therefore, it is best to be prepared in case it does rain on your big day. Here are some tips for how to be prepared...

Marry indoors or plan a sheltered area
The easiest solution to avoid the rain is to book an indoor wedding. Whether you have this at a church, a hotel or some other venue, an indoor wedding will protect you and your guests from the rain. If you have chosen to hold your wedding outdoors, make sure that there are the resources available to create sheltered areas at the venue. If there is a really heavy downpour, then the whole wedding party can take cover from the weather. Equally, while eating food outdoors is a nice idea, it is best to have a back-up plan in the event that it rains. This should either be inside or under a covered area to prevent the food from spoiling and the atmosphere being miserable.

Appropriate attire
If you are marrying at a time of the year when it is more likely to rain, then this is worth taking into consideration when choosing clothes for the bride and bridesmaids. Shoes in particular should be purchased with puddles in mind. While they should still match the outfits and look pretty, practicality should also be taken into account.

Transportation
Travelling in an open-top car or a horse and carriage can really make you feel like a princess for the day. However, if it rains, you will spoil your look before you have even arrived. Discuss with the company providing the transportation if alternative options will be available to you. Ask the driver to bring an umbrella for when you arrive at the venue.

Weather is an unpredictable entity, and rain can put a real downer on your wedding day. However, if you make alternative provisions and prepare in advance for the possibility of rain, you can still have a special and memorable day regardless of the weather.

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Well I was born in August and that makes me a Leo. Ever since I was a little child, I've always had big dreams to be an independent career woman. My grandparents instilled in me that hard work and perseverance pays off. They also told me that I could do anything I wanted in my life as long as I set my mind to it. So far, it's worked. That's the beauty behind the first part of DreamingLeo. As far as the "design" part, I am very crafty by nature. I would go into stores wanting a cute necklace or bracelet but not finding anything my style or color. So, 3 years ago, I set to make my own beaded jewelry. I've come a long way since then, and I make a variety of pieces. You'll see in my shop, that I love simple pieces as well as vintage or beaded ones. A lot of my beaded pieces are "One Of A Kind," meaning they will not be made again. I would prefer some pieces to stay original. There's no method to my creativity. :)

What are some trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite fashion trends?
For me, the trends for summer are (and always have been) color! I love color, and jewelry with color can make an outfit! I try to pay attention to the Pantone color guides to see what the hottest colors are. I like to tailor my jewelry to either match or complement those colors.

What are some things people should keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?
*Always read feedback/reviews on a shop before you buy.
*Price shop!
*If you see something you like but want a different color, ask the seller! It will never hurt to ask. The worse response you can get is "no."
*Ask for custom pieces -- that way you know it's truly one of a kind. I have had my customers ask me for things they have seen in magazines but know I can make cheaper.
*High prices doesn't always mean high quality.
*If you have any metal sensitivity, ask the sellers what metal their jewelry is made of before you buy.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
I like mixing and matching outfits that are in my closet. I try not to buy new clothes unless I absolutely have to. Even then if I find a shirt I like, I buy it in multiple colors. There are colors and patterns that look great together. I challenge myself to pair two different colors together sometimes, and it works! I'll even pair a patterned shirt with a solid color cardigan or necklace. Sometimes, I even like to make outfits around my jewelry.

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Oh this is a difficult question because I love everything that I make. If I had to choose, it would have to be my gold and orange asymmetrical flower necklace. When I found those beads, I bought every strand that was left. This necklace is one of a kind, and I will not be making another. I fell in love with them and have kept some behind for myself.

Think about this: No one wants to see the same dress or jewelry on someone else, especially an engagement ring.

Today, more and more young couples are finding the uniqueness they are looking for in antique engagement rings. Nothing compares to an authentic piece of antique jewelry. Frank Gesner of Gesner Estate Jewelry says the trend is not likely to end any time soon. “Our retail locations and our online stores have experienced exponential growth in the past five years. People are no longer interested in seeing a ring worn by someone else." BBB While manufacturers try to capitalize on the growing trend by designing rings that look like antique or look like vintage rings, it's important to understand what you are looking for when shopping for an antique engagement ring. Here are five tips that will help...

Make sure it’s authentic 
No matter the industry, whenever a product is popular and is in demand, manufacturers will try to capitalize on the market by making look-a-likes or replicas. A genuine antique is more than 50 years old. Make sure you can document the age of the piece before spending your hard-earned money on a piece that is mass produced.

The four Cs
With all diamond purchases, make sure that you consider the four Cs: color, carat, clarity and cut. Avoid any diamond with a color grade below H. Those are generally too yellow. When it comes to the cut of the diamond, make sure that you don't choose anything below very good -- you won't get the kind of sparkle that you are looking for. Clarity and carat weight are why diamonds are expensive. Obviously, the larger the stone, the more you can expect to pay. Vintage and antique diamonds were cut by hand, so keep that in mind when you are looking. Remember, no diamond is flawless.

Know in what era you ring was made 
Generally, there are three eras to consider before you purchase your ring. Art Deco designs are generally colorful and often feature a center stone that is framed with a number of smaller, different colored stones to provide eye-catching contrast. The Edwardian Era is known for its use of platinum, pearls and diamonds. Victorian jewelry often includes intricate designs and different colored stones like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Find a reputable dealer
Ultimately, you should be comfortable with the person or company you are buying your ring from, and that may take some time. Be patient. Reputable dealers are reputable because they have established relationships with consumers in the area, and you should do your best to try and contact some of those people. Most reputable dealers offer an opportunity to view vintage and antique jewelry without the pressure of a salesperson hovering nearby. Reputable dealers will offer documentation in the form of independent grading. If you are told there is no documentation and no grading papers, walk away. Be prepared to negotiate. Some people don't like to negotiate. If you are one of those, take somebody with you that isn't afraid to make an offer well below retail. The markup on jewelry is insanely high.

How much are you going to spend?
As you begin the process of searching for a ring, you will quickly discover that they are expensive. In fact, you will find yourself looking at prices before anything else. As a general rule, most people will tell you that spending 2 to 3 months salary is just about right.

Remember, you are making a purchase that will last a lifetime. Take your time, be patient and you will find that one-of-a-kind pierce you will treasure.

Tell me about you and your shop.
I've been an artist for as far back as I can remember. I studied studio art in college, where I earned my AA degree. This was also where I met an amazing landscape pastel artist, who was my mentor. I learned a great deal about color and design from him.

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Life took me on a different path, being a young mother at 22, and ending up a single mother for many years. Doing it all on my own, I felt it was best to put my dream on hold to support my daughter. Then, when my daughter was almost off to college, I was reading one of my favorite magazines and saw a small article about an entrepreneur who was selling handmade purses on Etsy. I thought, "What have I got to lose? If I don't put it out there, no one will see it!" So, I went online, set up my shop and have been loving it ever since. My art is an expression of my passion for beauty. I’m inspired by color, nature and beautiful scenes. I paint mostly in oils because I find I can’t get the texture and depth of colors I’m after with any other medium. But sometimes, I need a break from them and so will do an occasional watercolor or acrylic piece. While studying in school, most of my classes were watercolor classes, so it’s nice to get back to that. I'm always learning and evolving, exploring new things, and I enjoy sharing each new piece with my viewers. The greatest joy is when someone receives their painting and lets me know how much they love it! I love to hear where they will hang their new painting.

What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I love to shop online and lately have found Pinterest to be a great resource for finding new things, tips and deals. Also, since I’m an Etsy seller, I see a lot of wonderful shops that advertise specials. Following their shop on Facebook is one of the best ways to see what’s new and what deals they have going on. Occasionally, I offer free shipping on my work, which can be a great discount for some of the larger pieces. I’ll advertise this in my Etsy shop, on my Facebook and on my blog. I also can’t forget to mention blogs as another great place to find deals!

What are some ways that people can still decorate for less?
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to decorate your home. A lot of my best pieces of furniture were hand-me-downs. Nothing matches, but somehow everything fits together in an eclectic way. A great place to find larger pieces at a fraction of the original price is at your local consignment store. A meaningful piece of art to hang on your wall may be an investment, but it will last forever and bring life to any room. Art doesn’t have to be expensive to be good and work in your home. A trip to Etsy’s Art category will direct you to a number of fantastic artists selling their original pieces at half as much as they would be if you bought them in a gallery. This doesn’t mean the quality is anything less than what you might find at a high-end gallery; it just means you are paying the artist, and only the artist. It’s a more intimate relationship, and many times you can actually get to know the artist whose work is hanging on your walls. If you’re not ready to invest in an original piece, many artists offer prints that can be grouped together in clusters and make a big statement.

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
I have a hard time choosing a favorite piece in my shop. Every piece I create is a part of me and has come from my inner self. One of my favorites right now is a piece I recently completed of Kapalua in Maui. I have a little obsession with the Hawaiian Islands and the Aloha spirit. This piece speaks of my passion while capturing the essence of this magical place.

Tell me about you and your shop...
Tags-n-Stones is a collection of personalized, hand-stamped sterling silver and gold-filled tags, with precious stones. My Etsy shop, In Between Pages, has non-personalized jewelry and pieces for readers and writers alike. I’m also a young adult/new adult author with my debut releasing from Penguin Books this September. Those two creative sides of myself fit perfectly together.

What's the inspiration behind your shop's launch?
I like to wear simple and classic everyday silver or gold pieces. Sometimes I leave on one simple silver necklace for days -- one that goes with everything. I figured others did, too. The hand-stamping make them personal.

What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
This is not a question I can easily answer. Um, when you find out, let me know! I get sale emails from sites I subscribe to, which helps. Also, word of mouth on social media sites, maybe.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
You can find what you like in magazines and then re-create the look with cheaper pieces. Chunky jewelry, scarves or great shoes always dress up a simple t-shirt and jeans.

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
That’s a tough one. Spring is my favorite season, so probably any one of my bird pieces. I love little birdies and being able to hand-stamp something on them makes me happy.

Tell me about you and your shop.
I love dressing up, but in my everyday life, I like to be comfortable with the classic t-shirt and jeans. I started making jewelry for that fact of being able to have beautiful pieces that would easily transition from a day to evening look. They're subtle, yet they make a beautiful statement of less is more.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
For someone like me, I don't have a lot of time to do actual shopping; plus, I hate the crowds. So the best thing for me is online shopping. These sites have great fashion for less than what I would want to pay: NastyGal, ModCloth and ASOS.

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
My favorite piece in my shop right now is the Sunset Rocks Earrings. They're made to look sort of like a diamond with facets. I love how they glisten as the light hits each angle.

Tell me about you and your shop

A word that sums up the spirit of my shop is "whimsy." I like to do things that are colorful and fun. My pieces and subject matter are varied, similar to my background. I am Panamanian and was born in Panama. My Dad joined the U.S. Army, so we left Panama. I've lived all over the U.S., and I spent four years in Germany. I am a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate and spent a little more than four years in the Air Force. Military folks were often surprised when I told them I was an artist. For most, it seemed to be too much of a departure from what our "mission" was. But my parents never told me what I couldn't do. They just said whatever you do, strive to be the best. And not to be the best compared to others, but to be the best compared to my own potential. I enjoyed the Air Force tremendously, but there was a bigger life I was called to live. I became a real estate investor and eventually found my way into the insurance industry. I am the Vice President of The Brubaker Company, an independent agency based in Eaton, Ohio. I have been self-employed since I left the military in 2006, and I love what I do and the opportunities I have each and every day to make a difference in this world. I feel blessed! I am a big believer in the power of positivity and have a tremendous passion for sharing joy and possibility with others. My shop is an example of setting your mind to something and doing it! As I tell my agents, "Pull the trigger!"

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
I have been creating art and writing children's stories since I was a little girl. My shop is an expression of who I am and an opportunity to find my voice as I test new mediums. My shop opened when I made the decision to put my passion at the forefront of my life instead of waiting for "someday." My shop is a work in progress. I am developing my style, and I invite everyone along for the journey!

What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
There is ALWAYS a sale sooner or later! :) Be patient and diligent!

What are some ways that people can still decorate for less?
I am a big fan of recycling up! Be creative with what you already have! Solid colors are eternal! When you buy, imagine how your item will pair with other pieces that you already have! Simple, clean lines are always in style!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?

My favorite piece is currently this swan mixed media piece. It is my favorite piece because every time I look at it, I can't help but smile!

So tell me a bit about your shop and the inspiration behind its launch

The studio is located in LA. I relocated from NYC last summer. In the studio, there are two assistants, a canary, and soon, a Berger Picard puppy. The jewelry line launched about six years ago after taking a few metal working classes. I realized I absolutely loved it; it reminded me of my fine art sculpture classes when I was a fine art major as an undergrad. A few years later, I launched my jewelry line while I was still a freelance illustrator. A year later, I had transitioned full-time into jewelry.

 

What are some jewelry trends we're seeing as we move into the spring?

I do keep an eye out for trends but frankly, I usually make what I like. If a design continues to sell strongly, I do modifications and variations on the theme, but when it comes to making a new design, I usually try not to rely on current trends but more on what appeals to me aesthetically.

 

What should people keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?

I feel that you should buy what you're drawn to...and what you feel you can wear for years, not just because it's on trend.

 

What advice do you have for people looking for great online shopping deals?

Comparison shop. What may seem like a great deal may not be such a great deal. Often, there is someplace where you can get it for a greater discount. The beauty of the Internet.

 

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

My favorite is probably the baby octopus. I'm an avid diver, and I love spotting one when I'm diving.  They are fascinating, intelligent and beautiful to see underwater and up-close.

So tell me a bit about your shop and the inspiration behind its launch.

I've always been very inspired by words. I like the way they sound. I like the way they look on the page. I read the book The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman yeeeeeeeeears ago and knew immediately that my love language is "words of affirmation." I love loving others with my words, and I love to be loved with words in return. I also have made jewelry as a hobby since elementary school, particularly beaded designs. When people started asking me to make them jewelry, I thought that maybe I was on to something -- a little creative outlet. I was writing these notes to go along with the jewelry gifts I was giving my friends, letting them know how much they meant to me. And then it kind of just clicked. What if each of my pieces was customized with a compliment? The idea actually came to me while I was flipping through a magazine with my mom. The word compliment was in the title of an article. And it was just like, AH! I got it! I'm gonna run with this. And people responded with such positivity, I knew I was on the right track. Who doesn't love a genuine, heart-felt compliment? There's nothing better! Unless of course, it comes with a pretty, sparkly something with it! ;)

One of your passions is supporting education. Why do you think it's so important?
My day job is as an English and AVID teacher. In my first year teaching, I was fortunate enough to get involved with AVID. I was trained in incredible teaching methodologies that support all students in learning. I was raised with the value system that education and learning were priorities. I always loved school. But that was something in which I was supported. What I came to learn early on is that so many students HAVE the potential, but don't have the support for various reasons -- most commonly that they are the first in their families to pursue a higher education and their families simply don't know how to support them. In my years as an AVID teacher, I've met some of the most incredible human beings on the planet. Kids who come from all different types of situations -- addiction, poverty, homelessness, abuse -- and still have the drive and determination to say, "this is not what I want my life to be, and I'm going to do something about it." Talk about daily inspiration! AVID's mission is "to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society." This always struck a chord with me. Why should only wealthy white kids from two-parent households be given the best chances for educational success? I believe with all my heart that education is the number one way our society can and will evolve, and truly the future of our democracy depends on it. ALL kids should have the chance to have a real voice and choice in their lives. That doesn't happen without education. Disenfranchisement is a generational burden until one person breaks the cycle. That happens through education. The scholarship fund I've set up with Compliment is a teeny tiny drop in a very large bucket, but it's one way I can do more to contribute to a cause that is so important to me.

What are some jewelry trends we're seeing as we move into the spring?
I'm seeing really feminine jewelry designs. Things that are colorful and sparkly and just girly. Color-wise, mint is still super hot. Also, whites and golds. I'm planning to launch a bracelet and necklace line in late February/early March and the designs are colorful but not too loud. Very sweet.

What should people keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?
Well, it depends on the type of jewelry someone is shopping for. I can't speak to what people should look for when buying fine diamonds and rubies, for example. But when shopping at Compliment, or a store like mine, I think it's important for my customers to remember that each piece is handmade. They aren't uniform. No two pieces are exactly alike. I think there's beauty in that and that's one of the things I think my repeat customers love. My rings are free form and a little a-symmetrical. But that's what makes them so cool in my eyes. Also, because they are handmade, they do take a few days to get to you. But good things are worth the wait. ;)

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

I think my favorite piece is the button ring. It's super funky. The original design that's pictured on my site was made from the leftover beads of a necklace I'd bought that broke several years before. Once I started wire-wrapping rings, I was only working with Swarovski bicone crystals. But these little gemstone discs were so different and fun to experiment with, and I think the end product is really unique and fun and interesting. I wear my button ring ALL the time, and I get compliments on it every time I wear it. It has a special little place in my heart. :)

Very Jane is a boutique daily deals site. We sell everything from kid’s accessories and home decor to hand-stamped jewelry and crafting supplies. We offer between 10-12 deals each day for up to 75% off! We are lucky to work with sellers all over the nation who allow us to feature their products on our site. The inspiration behind its launch was two-fold: 1). Allow small business owners the opportunity for greater exposure and 2). Provide quality products to customers at a significant discount. We love working with both our customers and our sellers to provide the best deals possible.

How have trends and the culture of online shopping changed since you started the site?
We can’t say enough about the power of social media. That is perhaps the biggest change we have seen in the past year. Posting (on Facebook), blogging, pinning, and tweeting our deals is huge for the culture of online shopping as far as Very Jane is concerned! It’s not to say that all of these social media tools didn’t exist when the site was launched in April 2011, but we feel they have blossomed into more powerful and effective tools in the past 20 months.

What are the most popular deals that people are looking for when they come to Very Jane?
Oh, that is tough to say. Different customers are looking for different items. A lot of customers are delighted to find unique, handmade items for themselves or to gift. Some of our most popular deals seem to be “knock-offs” of trendy/popular jewelry. Many in our audience base love the fun children’s clothing and accessories too.

Where do you see the site in 5 years?
Just in this year alone, we plan on seeing the site offering more items to encompass a greater audience. We also see us fine-tuning some of our processes to provide a better overall shopping experience.

What's been the most popular item you've had?

Our most popular item has been the bubble bib necklaces. The first time we offered them, sales went through the roof! Our customers love statement necklaces, but these were more popular than we could have imagined.

So tell me about you and your shop. What's the inspiration behind its launch?

What started as handmade Christmas gifts has turned into a passion. I have worked as a photographer and mixed media artist for the last 10 years and wouldn’t have foreseen my branching off into candle making, but it’s been perfect for me! I honestly enjoy every aspect of candle making and experiment a lot to make sure I still have a great product because you can always grow in any creative venture. I launched my shop this year because I love the idea of home -- a place that is both intimate and friendly, and my work has always been geared toward the home. In that sense, candles are a perfect addition to my art. Every home or gathering is enhanced by the right candle and fragrance, and everyone seems to love to give and get them! My candles are sustainable, eco friendly and a clean burn. I enjoy offering a high-quality product to enhance the home!

What are your tips for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I do love and believe in shopping and supporting local when possible, but I have to admit I also love the option of shopping online; it has the potential to expose so many great and talented artists and crafters. I have found so many amazing artists online and enjoy being able to support them as much as a local shop. The important thing to me is quality and supporting someone who loves what they do. There’s something very satisfying in that to me.

What are some of your favorite things about winter?
I love when the wet snow sticks to the trees; it’s very enchanting. I am a sucker for anything seasonal and really enjoy each season for what it has to offer. Whether itss activities, foods, flavors, scents…I like to enjoy it all and refuse to let winter lose the whimsy it had as a child.

What is your favorite item in your shop and why?

I think I have two. I really enjoy making the novelty candles. I enjoy finding the original containers and offering seasonal fragrances. I enjoy the idea of an original piece finding the “right person” who likes it as much as I do! My first favorite is one of my Depression Glass pieces. I think depression glass is a part of our history and is sentimental to me to begin with, and I’m excited to have some depression glass pieces, but I love the Triangle piece. It’s definitely vintage; I can see it in a living room in the 1930s, but it also has such a modern sensibility to it as well. I also really enjoy my only green depression glass piece. It’s like an old cookie jar, both ornate and quaint, and it just brings a smile to my face. I try to make pieces and fragrances that have character and originality.

Tell me about your shop. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
My shop features my wide variety of artwork and the different styles and media I work in -- whether it be hand-pulled carved linocut prints or digital illustrative pieces. I actually started my shop on a whim as I was barely a year out of art school and was having trouble finding a full-time job (it was a rough year economically to graduate), so I decided to open a shop on Etsy selling some of the pieces I already had as I thought I really had nothing to lose. The rest is history!

What are some trends we're seeing as we move into the new year as far as artwork goes?
Color! I think I've been truly embracing happy, glorious color lately, and I see that shift as people are hungry for something bright, cheery and uplifting to put on their walls and surround themselves with. I feel like this also applies to fashion as there's a bright neon color accent trend going on; given the current economic climate, I think color reflects an optimistic outlook that people would like to have for the future. Of course, it doesn't have to be a rainbow of colors, but it can be more sophisticated color palette.

What are some things people should keep in mind when shopping for artwork?
Purchase artwork that makes you happy as artwork can really set the tone for a room and house, and know that when you buy directly from artists, you are supporting the handmade community as it is this support that enables the work to be produced. Additionally, I think people have to be very careful that they are purchasing the "real thing." I've had my artwork lifted and sold as someone else's own and oftentimes, we look at the lower price rather than the quality. It affects independent artists and designers so much when people shop at places -- big corporations and small companies alike -- that blatantly steal images from artists without any compensation.

What are some ways that people can decorate for less?
Online sites like Etsy, ebay, and Craigslist are great sources for affordable pieces that people can use to decorate for less. Aside from that, I love doing DIY stuff and following the many awesome DIY tutorials that are often posted on various blogs. I also love perusing local thrift stores for amazing finds. You'd be amazed at how much you can change the look of something with just a little creativity and DIY! Having something look good doesn't necessarily mean you have to spend a lot of money!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?I don't think I have one particular "favorite" piece as I feel like a mother and that they are all my children. But I have a special spot for my House Sparrow as that is the first ever linocut piece I did.
