NYC Diaries: 5 Things You'll See at a Taylor Swift Concert

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

FREE IMAGES
This weekend, I unleashed my inner 11-year-old and went with a couple of my closest friends to see Taylor Swift. I’ve been a fan of her music since I was 14, so I feel no shame in admitting that I’ll give up a Saturday night any day to sing along (at the top of my lungs) to some of the best breakup songs ever written. And I thought I’d prepare you for what you’re getting yourself into if YOU ever attend the famous Red tour. So without further ado, here are a few things you’re guaranteed to see if you decide to see Taylor live...
Costume changes
Taylor’s known for her sense of style, and she doesn’t disappoint at her concert. Be ready to see lots of preppy polka dots and stripes on her more casual outfits. As for the gowns, think fairytale princess, and that’ll give you a pretty good idea of her fashion choices. Swift is the queen of girl sparkles and glitter, and she always looks perfect in them. As an added bonus, the area just inside the stadium had a museum display of some of Taylor’s most memorable outfits, including the outfit above.
Crazy outfits
People really get into the spirit of the tour and dress up to support their favorite country-pop artist. Many of those who attended on Saturday draped LED lights over their clothes, donned over-the-top themed costumes (there were a few bridal outfits in the audience, which I didn’t really understand), and Sharpied their favorite Swift lyrics onto their skin. Among my favorite costumes were a boy covered from head to toe in red solo cups and a man dressed as a Teletubby.

Creative signs
As with the costumes, people go all out for this concert. So be prepared to see cute slogans like “Cray cray for Tay Tay” and huge posters with the number “22” written on them. There were also a few trios who each held up a letter of “red” and then lowered the “r” when Ed Sheeran took the stage.
Red
Yes, it’s the name of the tour as well as a prominent motif throughout the show. From red dresses to red fireworks to red instruments, you’ll be seeing a lot of this color. And you’ll be feeling all of the emotions -- from bitter resentment over tough breakups to fiery joy over falling in love -- right along with Taylor.
Talent
If you’re going to the concert for Taylor, you won’t be disappointed. She’s at the top of her game singing and dancing high-energy numbers across the stage. (It was super hot and muggy outside, so I kind of felt bad for all the performers sweating under the many stage lights). But Swift’s not the only one who shines under the spotlight. Opening act Ed Sheeran is AMAZING. I’ll admit that I’d only heard of his song “The A-Team” when I first saw him perform. But right after the concert, I added all his songs to my favorites playlist. If you haven’t heard “Lego House,” go listen to it RIGHT NOW!

I'm big on stories (obviously!), and there's nothing I love more than hearing the stories behind creative types and their equally creative projects. It's just so interesting, and I had the pleasure of interviewing one of those creative types recently. Lisa Leonard is the brains behind the beautiful Lisa Leonard Designs. The California-based designer, who has been making jewelry since her high school days, creates simple, lovely pieces. Her necklaces, bracelets and earrings can be worn with everything from everyday jeans to an evening dress, and she also specializes in personalized home decor and wedding items. She wants each piece to be meaningful, and she definitely achieved her goal. Read on for the inside scoop on her new line and the story behind her current piece in her shop! xoxo

Tell me about yourself and the shop
I grew up in Orange County, in Cyprus, which is near Long Beach, so it's North Orange County, not the South Orange County you see on TV. I met my husband, Steve, and we had my first son, David. I went full term not knowing anything was wrong with David. The day before he was born, it became clear that there were some issues, so they brought me in and induced. We had this tiny baby that weighed only four pounds and had just two fingers on his left hand. They told us that David will probably be a vegetable and that we needed to come to terms with that. We were devastated. I remember both of us were just sitting on my hospital bed just sobbing. I remember thinking one of us needs to pull it together. In that moment, I remember saying, "We don't know what the future holds, no one can say that this is what David will be." Long story short...we absolutely fell in love with David. He has what is called Cornelia De Lange Syndrome. Usually they don't like to be touched, but David loves to be held—he's a total cuddle bug. He's had multiple major surgeries since, but we found out that David is a pretty tough little guy. Despite all of his challenges, he's determined and feisty. Eighteen months later, my second son, Matthias, was born.

A couple years later, we found out a church in San Luis Obispo needed a new pastor, so my husband took over as pastor, and we moved north. I was working in special education and doing in-home therapy with toddlers with special needs. With my two babies at home, one with severe special needs, it felt like I was doing the same thing at home that I was doing at work. I needed to break it up and do something different, and wanted to spend more time with my boys. I already had the jewelry business, but it was more of a hobby back then. But we thought we could really build something through my designs. So I quit my job and started approaching local boutiques about the jewelry. I stated blogging and found out people were really interested in what I was making. It was all very low-tech, but after Steve's friend built an official Web site, it just exploded. We were at the forefront of of a handmade jewelry movement, customized pieces where you could have your kids name on it, for example. It was super organic and grassroots. It's come a long way since then and is continuing to grow daily.

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
The inspiration behind the Summer Line is finding beauty. Life can seem dark and broken, but there is beauty to be found. Each piece is inspired from the seemingly insignificant things that bring so much beauty and warmth. There is an artisan collection as well as a classic collection— both of which we couldn't be more excited about. Please feel free to browse through the pieces and read the descriptions to learn more!

What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I would say stay connected! In the blog world, there are always great deals being offered and giveaways being hosted. There are some fabulous blogs that feature the newest deals -- once you find them, add them to your RSS feed and you will stay in the loop.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
Thrift! Thrift! Thrift! I have found some AMAZING pieces at local thrift shops. It takes some searching, but it's so fun when you find that unique gems!
What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Right now, it's the beauty in the brokenness necklace. It so reflects my heart and the core of what Lisa Leonard Designs stands for. Life is imperfect, but that's what makes it beautiful. I'm overwhelmed by the stories I have heard about finding strength in being broken since we've launched it. Definitely my top pick right now.

Family Photos: What I learned in New York City

Thursday, July 11, 2013

FREE IMAGES
New York! The Big Apple! Broadway! Whatever you think of when you think New York City, it is bound to have a little excitement associated with it, right? Well, I just got back from a weekend in Manhattan and I learned something there. Here's the story...

I left on Friday to go spend the weekend with my niece Mona, who lives on the Upper West Side. I was ready for some frolicking and fun. Instead, what I got was warm (and not because of the 100-degree heat!) and cozy family time! Who would have thought?

You see, along with Mona, we were overflowing with family that hadn’t seen one another for a while, certainly not since the death of my father, who was truly the patriarch of the family. It turned out that my sister Elaine, nephews John and Mike, along with Mike’s wife Jade, nephew David, wife Belinda, their two sons and my niece Jennifer and her partner Rosita were all there! Everyone was so excited to see one another. We would be looking around at the museum, and we would just stop and start trading stories. We had long lunches and dinners where the focus was on each other and not the food. We commiserated with one another over the sweltering heat! We sat around Mona’s small apartment and watched the newest generation play, and we played right along with them. We teased Mona ceaselessly about her obsessive scheduling of vacations, but in the end, we appreciated having things planned out for us. One morning, when I was out taking pictures for Melissa’s blog, I came back and Mona had a lovely plate of breakfast made for me. Over lunch the last day, I found myself with my camera out, showing my nephew's son the pictures from the weekend and having him tell me who everyone was. And, you know what? He did! I can honestly say that it was not the hubbub of the city that I am going to carry with me; it is the feeling that comes from being with family, and for that, I am very grateful!
During the few quiet times we had, and even during the loud ones, I often found myself thinking about my dad. It'a only been four months since his death, and I couldn't help but think, “Look, Dad. Look at what you created -- your family misses you terribly, but we will go on and live good lives, stay in contact and make you proud!”

So, next time you take a vacation, remember that what you think will happen might not be what really does happen in the end. Maybe what happens will be even better than you ever dreamed!

NYC Diaries: 8 Weird Things That Are Not Weird in NYC

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

FREE IMAGES
When it comes to odd sights, New Yorkers have pretty much seen it all. We’re used to the strange and avant-garde. I mean, this is Lady Gaga’s home state, and it can’t get any weirder than that, right? But there are a few things in this lovely city that just wouldn’t happen anywhere else. And here are my favorites...

People dressed as superheroes and other characters
How do you make a quick buck in the city? Dress up as a popular kids’ movie/show character and charge tourists a dollar to take a photo with you. IT sounds like a total scam, and it basically is, but you’d be surprise how many tourists fall for it just to take a picture with Superman.

Heavily armed cops EVERYWHERE
Cops are one thing. But these guys are seriously ready for the zombie apocalypse with all the weapons they’re carrying. Scary? Yes. But you’ll feel really REALLY safe around them.

Street performers
An impromptu breakdancing show? Yes, please! Crowds often gather in the middle of the sidewalk to watch these talented amateur performers do amazing feats. And the best part is that it’s totally free.

Starbucks and Duane Reade stores on EVERY corner
I’m not kidding -- they’re on EVERY corner. So you have no excuse to miss a coffee run in New York City!

Rudeness
It’s just something you’re going to have to accept about New York: People are not always nice. The sidewalks are typically very crowded, and people will bump into you (both accidentally and on purpose). The first time I traveled to the Midwest and someone greeted me good morning as he passed, I remember looking at him like he was insane. Things like that just don’t happen around here.

HUGE stores
We have Macy’s and Toys R’ Us (complete with a full-sized indoor Ferris wheel). These stores are gigantic! I seriously can’t even shop in the supersized Forever 21 here because I get so overwhelmed. You’d think that so many options would be amazing, but it’s really kind of frustrating.

Celebrities
This is their territory and here, they are normal people. So don’t be surprised if you run into Ryan Gosling walking his dog around the block (like my super lucky friend did!).

Food trucks
You see them on college campuses once in a while, but in New York City, they’re a big deal. From Indian food to protein shakes to overpriced cupcakes, these food trucks are like mini restaurants just waiting for you to try their gourmet offerings. Just make sure you have enough of a sweet tooth to sample from all of the amazing bakeshops around town!

NYC Diaries: 4 reasons to love summer in the city

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

FREE IMAGES
New York is a great city with wonderful things to do and see throughout the year, but let’s face it: There’s nothing like a warm and beautiful city summer. This is my third summer officially working here, so I’ve had plenty of time to get used to and relish in the wonderful sights and activities this place has to offer. And over the past few years, I’ve grown to love some of the places and events that make these summers unique to the Big Apple...

A park with a view!
The High Line is perhaps the most serene area in the whole City. If there’s one place to escape the hustle and bustle of the streets but not travel TOO far, it’s here. A public park built on a historic railroad above the streets of NYC, the High Line is my favorite place to go to catch a break. There are flowers and grassy patches and vendors of all different kinds of things, from street art to gelato. I used to visit the park every morning during my first internship at the Oxygen Network, reading and trying to get a tan out in the lounge area.

Pet paradise!
It seems that everyone who lives in New York City has a dog, and summer is the season when you can’t step outside without passing by someone walking his or her pet. I’m an animal lover, so it’s always fun to see all the different dogs interact and play with each other. It serves as a reminder of the simpler pleasures in life.

Street style!
One of the best parts of summer is that we can shed our heavy and often less-than-cute winter coats and galoshes in favor of sundresses and strappy sandals. Summer always has the nicest fashions, and it’s great to see the variety of pretty outfits people wear to work as well as on their days off. And New York is never short on style!

Celebrity spotting at the gym!
Along with warmer weather comes more outdoor activities, which means that everyone’s rushing to the local gyms to sculpt that last-minute beach body. (I’ll admit that I’m one of those people.) And the best part is that celebrities frequent many of the NYC gyms. Hugh Jackman works out down the block from my office, for instance. And singer Sara Bareilles was in my gym just a few days ago! But not everyone depends on the gym to lose the extra winter weight. Summer’s the season where you’ll see a lot of joggers passing by. And it’s always nice to see the cute guys of New York shed their shirts and show off their near-perfect abs after a long day at work, isn’t it?
Have a happy summer!

Tell me about Happily Ever Borrowed. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
I have three older sisters, and from the age of 12, I was helping to plan their weddings. When I was in college and designing bridal gowns, my one sister asked me to make hers. That was far too much pressure for me, but I offered to help shop with her. When I saw the poor quality and construction of the cheaper gowns, I was horrified. All women deserve to wear quality products on their wedding day. We were also astonished at the high prices of veils, headpieces and jewelry. After spending their entire budget on their dress, most women forget that they need to accessorize as well! This is one of the most common instances where brides exceed their budget. My sisters begged me to find a solution. I let the idea sit for quite a while, but after my third sister got married, the idea started to materialize.

What has the response been like? What's your most-rented item?
The response has been wonderful! We've serviced over 200 weddings to date, and we just keep getting busier! Our most popular item has to be the Isabella Cuff by Enchanted Atelier. It's totally gorgeous and adds a vintage touch to your wedding accessories.

What are some wedding trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite wedding trends overall?
We're definitely seeing a huge trend with statement pieces. Where brides were being quite subtle with their accessories for a few years, we're now seeing a movement towards large statement necklaces and cuffs. We also LOVE the feather trend for weddings overall. They can add a really soft but trendy touch to an ensemble.

What are some things people should keep in mind when planning for their big day?
Just remember the reason you're there: To enjoy the day and marry your best friend. Let others sweat the small stuff for you!
What is your favorite item in Happily Ever Borrowed and why?
That's like choosing my favorite child! I just can't! But, I really do love our new Sophie Petite by Enchanted Atelier. It can be worn as a necklace, headpiece and belt. I LOVE the versatility of being able to change your look with just once piece throughout your wedding day.

Disabilities In The Media: Nicole Kelly raises awareness as Miss Iowa

Thursday, June 13, 2013

First Iowa, next America? When Caitlin posted about Nicole Kelly on Facebook, I knew I had to share it, friends. The recently crowned Miss Iowa was born without her left forearm, and will go on to compete for the Miss America title on September 15th. Her inspiring platform? Overcoming disabilities.

"A year ago, I certainly didn't see "pageant titleholder" in my future," she says in her pageant profile. "Perhaps I didn't originally envision this path, but I now know that being Miss Iowa is the perfect fit for me, and I feel so blessed to be surrounded by people who have encouraged me every step of the way. Giving a voice to my platform, Overcoming Disabilities, is a tremendous honor and I am thrilled to continue my adventure by speaking out and touching lives as Miss Iowa 2013."
How inspiring is that? Way to go, Nicole! Can't wait to see you on the stage in September, and thanks for inspiring such self-confidence! xoxo

P.S. A fun new feature is coming up shortly! :)

Do or Don't: The disability edition

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

My mom is well into her last week of school before summer vacation, and this week, her students are reading a book about a girl with cerebral palsy. To teach them about disabilities in the real world, she made an awesome PowerPoint and was so excited to show it to me. It was the first PowerPoint she ever made, and she was quite proud of herself -- and so was I. She included everything from why inclusion is so important in schools to some facts about Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome and how I've dealt with my disability over the years. My favorite slide, though, was this one, on what to do and what not to do when interacting with someone with a physical disability...
I'm a big fan of speaking directly to the person. I can't tell you how many times I've been out with someone, especially at a restaurant, and people will come up to us and ask questions as if I'm not even there. It's all about squashing those stereotypes, friends! Way to go, Mom!

P.S. Disability bingo and common disability misconceptions.

Tell me about your shop. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Bow+Arrow Art was a long time coming, I think. I've been filling the margins of every notebook I've ever owned since I was big enough to hold a marker :) My mom and husband finally convinced me to sell some of my designs last year. It was hard to think of my doodles as "art" but it has been so fun to share them! You can read a little more about it here.

What are some of your favorite design trends?
Well I loooove how imperfect is beautiful in a lot of trends these days. From hand-written typography to vintage furniture, people are finding value in the old and flawed. It makes my heart so happy that people will buy my cards and prints because they're original and reflections of me rather than a perfect cookie-cutter copy!

What's your #1 piece of design and style advice?
I'm not good at offering advice...and I don't consider myself to be particularly stylish. I say be you and find the people who love YOU.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
I genuinely think that confidence is the most beautiful accessory there is. Find something to love about what you wear and rock it with pride. It doesn't have to be expensive, and it certainly doesn't need to be what everyone else is wearing. My favorite outfits originate from $4 skirts at the Goodwill, but they make me feel sassy, and I feel really good about saving money and not contributing more waste by buying brand new clothes!

What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
This is my current fave. Mostly because I'm madly in love with the old hymn it comes from and I came up with this design while daydreaming about a tattoo I'd like to get :) However, this is my close runner-up because it's like a little pep talk every time you see it!

NYC Diaries: The one in which I learn to own my 'flaws'

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

FREE IMAGES
When I was a little girl, I was a big fan of Disney princess movies. I wanted to be glamorous and pretty just like them, and I wanted more than anything for my own personal Prince Charming to fall madly in love with me for being so glamorous and pretty. It seemed like a practical and obvious dream at the time. If Cinderella could attract her perfect man with just a warm smile and a kind heart (being a princess seemed to require a kind heart, didn't it?), why shouldn't I aspire to do the same? Well, I’m an adult now. And love is complicated, to say the least.

So I've spent half my life obsessing over improving my looks and striving to be stick-skinny in hopes that I’d attract Mr. Right. I've spent countless hours in front of my bedroom mirror trying to minimize the appearance of my physical disability, certain that my future prince would not be attracted by a hunk of metal that made up my artificial left arm. I thought I had everything figured out, and I believed I’d live a happy life if I was pretty enough to catch his eye and nice enough to keep him interested. I never considered that maybe the thing that I so desperately tried to hide exactly what a guy could fall for.
In my (albeit somewhat limited) dating experience, I've always been a sucker for the classic compliments every girl wants to hear: “you’re beautiful,” “you’re so sweet." And those are great, but recently someone tried a completely different line. He told me that he was attracted by my strength, which was a trait I never gave much thought to in terms of impressing a guy. He said that I seemed like the kind of girl who could get through anything and still put on a brave face afterward. And yes, he mentioned how my disability contributed to that.

This boggled my mind. In previous relationships, my physical difference had been something to overlook or accept. It was never something I thought of as an asset. But now I can appreciate my disability as part of who I am and as something that has given me the strength I rely on today. And now that I've grown to love myself and become much more confident, I realize that that courage I rock on a daily basis is pretty damn hot.
So maybe I’m not a Disney princess, perfectly pretty and put-together, but I know how to own my flaws. And I also know now that the perfect guy for me will be attracted by the things, glamorous or not, that make me who I am and by the strength behind my struggles.

You all know I'm a pretty big lover of words, but when it comes to crafts and design, well, let's just say that my skills are pretty lacking. Today, friends, I'm excited to share a fun interview with Deanna of Paper-Treats, a Rhode Island-based paperie and design studio. She has a knack for combining both, and the results are beautiful. So tell me a bit about your shop and the inspiration behind its launch.
Paper-Treats is a paperie and design studio that showcases my work. I love to dream up designs for invitations, cards and all sorts of paper goods. When I got married, I loved designing all of the little details for my wedding from the invitations to the table numbers. Soon after, a friend asked me to design her wedding invitations. Before I knew it, more people were looking for wedding invitations. This sparked Paper-Treats. I recently launched a greeting card line when I realized that I struggled to find the perfect cards in stores.

Where do the ideas for your designs come from?
My greeting card designs are inspired by things that I find in nature, design blogs, magazines and on Pinterest. I carry a little sketchbook with me at all times where I doodle down inspiring ideas that I see. My one-of-a-kind designs are inspired by the person that requests them. I like to learn about my clients before I begin to design. Through a series of design concepts, we come up with the ideal solution for them. Sometimes the bride isn't sure what she wants. I look at this as an adventure instead of a challenge. I love to gather and share inspiration with them so that they can tell me what they see and like.

What's your favorite part of owning your own shop? What has surprised you the most?
My favorite part of owning my own shop is using my imagination. I love to be creative and just have fun trying to imagine what people want. It feels really great to take something from concept to reality; for me, it's really about the journey as much as the final product.

What is your advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I think the more you browse, the smarter the shopper you will be. You'll start to recognize who really cares about their craft. Ultimately, the best deals are when you find items that give you the most pleasure for your dollar. If you appreciate great design and can get it for a fair price, then everyone wins!
What is your favorite item in your shop and why?
This is a really tough question...I have favorite bits and pieces of each project. If I had to pick, I would say my wedding suite for Dana & Colin. I loved working with them. Dana was so open to any and all ideas. She was so excited throughout the entire process. We pulled inspiration from everywhere. Each piece is so unique but still works together with the other pieces. This project let me be a fine artist and a designer. I created a custom font style for their names by hand and then brought it to the computer. Seeing everything together -- from the folded invitation, stamp, post card, etc. -- really makes me smile!

Re-imagined Abercrombie ads

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Have you been following the continued fall-out following a few choice words by Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries on who exactly he wants -- and more importantly, doesn't want -- wearing his brand? Everyone from celebrities to bloggers have been reading Jeffries the riot act, but perhaps no one captured the collective sentiment better than blogger Jes M. Baker from The Militant Baker. Not only did Baker address Jeffries in an open letter, but she also shot a mock Abercrombie ad campaign called Abercrombie & Fat.
"I was inspired by the opportunity to show that I am secure in my skin and to flaunt this by using the controversial platform that you created," writes Baker. "Not only do I know that I'm sexy, but I also have the confidence to pose nude in ways you [Jeffries] don’t dare."
"The world is progressing in inclusive ways whether you deem it cool or not. The only thing you've done through your comments (about thin being beautiful and only offering XL and XXL in your stores for men) is reinforce the unoriginal concept that fat women are social failures, valueless, and undesirable. Your apology doesn't change this."

As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." I'd say Baker just said the millions of words people have been thinking for weeks, wouldn't you? Such an inspiring woman...way to go!!! xoxo

Sponsor Spotlight: Modern Edge Clothing

Monday, May 20, 2013

If there's one thing I've learned since I started blogging nearly five years ago, it's how much fun fashion can be as an expression of who you are. It's the perfect reflection of your personality (polo shirts, anyone?), and there's always something for everyone -- from brights to understated elegance. Well, today, I'm excited to share a fun interview with Alyssa from Modern Edge Clothing, an online women's boutique that describes itself as "classy, sexy and edgy." Read on to find out how the shop got its start and what summer trends to keep an eye out for as the weather heats up! xoxo

Tell me about Modern Edge. What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Modern Edge caters to young women who love to express who they are through clothing. The inspiration behind Modern Edge started when I realized most women in their 20s dress not according to their age. They do not know how to break away from wearing the boring t-shirt-and-jeans combo. I've always had great taste in fashion and others always complimented me on my style. So I decided to open my own online shop. Modern Edge stands for classy, sexy and edgy -- a style that is above all others. Modern Edge is fairly new, but I feel it will quickly catch on and be a huge inspiration to women all over!

What are some trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite fashion trends?
Some of our favorite trends are bodycon dresses and a lot of mint! Mint is such a popular color right now, and for good reason! It’s such a fun and bright color, not to mention flattering. Bodycon dresses are perfect for the warmer weather and are a great, simple way to dress up.

What are some things people should keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?
One thing to keep in mind is what outfit you plan to wear the jewelry with. A common mistake people make is buying jewelry just because it looks cute, and then they realize it doesn't go with any of their outfits! It’s always good to step outside your comfort zone and try something new, but it probably won’t get worn if you have nothing to go with it!

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
One of the best ways to look chic for less is to spice up an outfit with a new statement piece (like a cute pair of shoes or a fun jacket) that you can mix and match with basic items you already have in your closet. It’s a great way to give new life to your everyday outfits!
What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Right now, one of our favorite pieces in the shop is our chiffon peep toe heels. They are perfect for summer, day or night, and they are one of our bestsellers (did we mention that they also come in mint?). They go great with basically anything: dresses, skirts or even jeans!

I'm excited to share a fun interview today with Rachael, the Maryland-based artist and designer behind Dreamingleo Designs. Rachael's creative mind kicked in at an early age. She had dreams of being an independent career woman, and her grandparents taught her that hard work and perseverance pays off. Read on for the story behind her shop's launch, her take on summer trends and her expert shopping advice! xoxo

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Well I was born in August and that makes me a Leo. Ever since I was a little child, I've always had big dreams to be an independent career woman. My grandparents instilled in me that hard work and perseverance pays off. They also told me that I could do anything I wanted in my life as long as I set my mind to it. So far, it's worked. That's the beauty behind the first part of DreamingLeo. As far as the "design" part, I am very crafty by nature. I would go into stores wanting a cute necklace or bracelet but not finding anything my style or color. So, 3 years ago, I set to make my own beaded jewelry. I've come a long way since then, and I make a variety of pieces. You'll see in my shop, that I love simple pieces as well as vintage or beaded ones. A lot of my beaded pieces are "One Of A Kind," meaning they will not be made again. I would prefer some pieces to stay original. There's no method to my creativity. :)

What are some trends we're seeing as we move into the summer? What are some of your favorite fashion trends?
For me, the trends for summer are (and always have been) color! I love color, and jewelry with color can make an outfit! I try to pay attention to the Pantone color guides to see what the hottest colors are. I like to tailor my jewelry to either match or complement those colors.

What are some things people should keep in mind when shopping for jewelry?
*Always read feedback/reviews on a shop before you buy.
*Price shop!
*If you see something you like but want a different color, ask the seller! It will never hurt to ask. The worse response you can get is "no."
*Ask for custom pieces -- that way you know it's truly one of a kind. I have had my customers ask me for things they have seen in magazines but know I can make cheaper.
*High prices doesn't always mean high quality.
*If you have any metal sensitivity, ask the sellers what metal their jewelry is made of before you buy.

What are some ways that people can still look chic for less?
I like mixing and matching outfits that are in my closet. I try not to buy new clothes unless I absolutely have to. Even then if I find a shirt I like, I buy it in multiple colors. There are colors and patterns that look great together. I challenge myself to pair two different colors together sometimes, and it works! I'll even pair a patterned shirt with a solid color cardigan or necklace. Sometimes, I even like to make outfits around my jewelry.
What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
Oh this is a difficult question because I love everything that I make. If I had to choose, it would have to be my gold and orange asymmetrical flower necklace. When I found those beads, I bought every strand that was left. This necklace is one of a kind, and I will not be making another. I fell in love with them and have kept some behind for myself.

Guest Post: My mom on motherhood

Well, once again, Melissa has asked me to do a guest post on her blog. I always get a bit nervous when she asks me because she is the writer in the family, not me! But, here goes...

My mother Elenore Erlandson was indeed the best mother any person could ask for. I remember the feeling of security that I had when I was really young when I would literally hide in her skirts (I was a shy little thing!). She taught me the power of just being there. How lucky I was! She also taught me to take responsibility for myself...there were no excuses for misbehaving in our house, especially out in public or in school. It just didn't happen, as we would never want to disappoint her or my dad. Of course, we were typical kids, and sometimes we would act up. These were the times I learned responsibility for my actions. I remember how mad I would get when, after I would slam my door yet another time, my mom would -- oh so calmly -- come up, open the door and ask me to close it properly. She taught me gentleness mixed with the firmness that children need to succeed. I still have a bottle of her perfume that I open to this day and breathe in the essence of my dear mother.
Melissa also asked me what I have learned from being a mother. Well, it sure is not as easy as my mother made it look! It’s the hardest yet most-rewarding job I have ever had. I know that sounds trite, but the reason people always say it is because it is so true! I have also learned that, if my mom was anything like me at my age, that maybe she was not as sure of herself as I perceived her to be! Being a mother is a gift, and I am so lucky to have my two “girls”!

She also asked me what three things I wish someone would have told me about being a mother. There is only one that stands out…..DO NOT WORRY SO MUCH! 99% of what I have worried about over the years never came to pass, and the other 1% got dealt with as it came up. Loosen up, let the house be messy and spend every moment that you can with your kids. Time really does pass in the blink of an eye!

P.S. More posts on motherhood.

How do you deal with haters?

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Remember when I wrote about certain anonymous creepsters for xoJane, friends? Well, if I've learned anything since graduating from high school and college, it's that the bullies and the haters and the general creepies magically disappear once you graduated from high school and college. In a perfect world, they would. But unfortunately, they don't.

So, my strategy for dealing with them has always been one of blind indifference -- that sort of "turn-the-other-cheek" mentality with the hope that once they see they can't get a rise out of me, they'll get bored and move on to their next victim in the metaphorical playground that is the Internet. The strategy has worked wonders (yay!!), and save for the occasional comment here and there, I think I've finally found my balance and no longer want to spend my evenings drowning my poor sorrows in a tall glass of root beer.

But, embrace my haters? Even more, love my haters? Huh? That's something I've never really thought of, and yet, that's precisely what author Ann Friedman is doing. In her New York magazine article, Friedman describes how, instead of ignoring her haters, she actually loves them. What's more, she even treasures all that hate mail she receives, taking it as a sign that her writing is really making an impact.

"Haters aren’t something to be feared," she says. "They’re validation that you’re a big deal. And they’re fuel to do better. Now you’re inspired to prove that their jealousy is warranted."

To illustrate her point, Friedman came up with a Hierarchy of Haters, a handy chart to help rate the hate. "The hierarchy just helps me to compartmentalize them. It’s not that I stop caring altogether, it’s that I care much less about the least consequential among them," she says. She explains it like this...

*High-order haters are those who really know how to hurt you; they may have real power or influence in your social or professional world. These are the folks you might consider responding to, or otherwise defending yourself against.
*Low-level haters are usually people of little professional or social consequence to you. These are the folks who call you fat and ugly because they disagree with your views on, say, the federal debt.
*The lower a hater is on the pyramid, the more likely it is that the best response is to ignore him — while taking pride in the knowledge that, wherever the hater falls in this hierarchy, his or her very existence means you’re succeeding in having an impact.
How refreshing is this? What a great way to put a positive spin on something that could potentially be a very negative experience. Do you agree with the hierarchy? Anything you would add to it? How have you dealt with haters in the past, friends, either online or in your everyday life? xoxo

P.S. Haters gonna hate and Internet niceness.

In The Pursuit of Happiness: Susan Sarandon on aging

We've mused about our favorite age before, and I'm eagerly (and a bit nervously...) anticipating turning the big 3-2 in August. So often, we hear stories from people -- both men and women -- who are deathly afraid of aging and will try everything from Botox to invasive plastic surgery to recapture the fountain of youth. The lesson? Aging is something to be feared. It should be avoided at all costs.

So, it was refreshing to read a recent interview with actress Susan Sarandon in this week's USA Weekend. The 66-year-old, who stars in the new film The Big Wedding, says the best age is definitely well into your 30s...

"It has to be post-30, because you spend your 20s trying to figure out who you are and what your voice is. I was hitting my stride in my 40s. My 60s haven't been too bad."
Thank you, Ms. Sarandon! It's so nice to hear from someone who is so beautifully embracing their age. Isn't she inspiring? Who else do you admire for aging gracefully? What have they taught you, friends? xoxo

NYC Diaries: Why I only date nerds

I LOVED Melissa’s post yesterday about the 5 types of guys every girl should be crushing on. And since relationships and dating have been on my mind so much lately, I thought this was the perfect topic to write about. While I’ve had my share of crushes on all different types of men, I’ve found that those who would likely fall under the category of “nerd” make the best boyfriends. Sure, they get bad reputations about never seeing sunlight and living in the basement fixated on their Dungeons and Dragons or World of Warcraft. And sure, they can be a bit socially awkward. But underneath the 5 o’clock shadow and duct-taped glasses is often what every girl has been searching the world for: an amazing Prince Charming. Don’t believe me? Fine. I’ll give you 3 reasons why your Knight in shining armor is probably an actual Knight in shining armor in some fictional online world...

They’re smart
Nerds come in all kinds; there are history buffs, gamers, bookworms, etc. There’s no singular mold that defines what exactly the typical nerd looks or acts like, but I can assure you that you’ll probably know a nerd when you see one. But whether they’re “book smart” or just really obsessed with Star Wars, nerds are insanely knowledgeable when it comes to their particular fields of interest. And like Melissa often reminds us, brains can be extremely sexy.

They have the potential to be stylish
Who doesn’t want a guy who can dress well and look snazzy? When you date a nerd, you can rest assured that he won’t be wearing pants that constantly expose his rear end or eight pounds of metal accessories in an attempt to look like a bad-ass. Classic “nerdy” wardrobe choices -- like bow ties, sweater vests or a flattering pair of glasses -- can be very attractive on the right person.

They (usually) aren’t jerks
When you date a guy who knows he’s hot and is used to getting whatever girl he wants, he probably won’t know how to appreciate you. But a nerd who doesn’t normally see much action will most likely treat you the way you deserve. Nerds are also often less shallow and superficial, too. So I’m not sure if this is any comfort to you, but your nerdy man is typically more interested in your gaming skills than the way you did your hair and makeup. But then again, that’s not an entirely bad thing, right? Happy dating!

There's something so mesmerizing about art, isn't there? It can have the power to draw us in and transport us to magical places. Well, friends, Jennifer Beaudet's oil paintings do just that. The artist's Etsy shop is full of her original work, including landscapes, flowers and blank note cards. Beaudet has been an artist for as long as she can remember, and she expresses herself through each of her pieces. Read on to learn about her past experience, shopping advice and why she likes a particular item in her shop! xoxo

Tell me about you and your shop.
I've been an artist for as far back as I can remember. I studied studio art in college, where I earned my AA degree. This was also where I met an amazing landscape pastel artist, who was my mentor. I learned a great deal about color and design from him.

What's the inspiration behind its launch?
Life took me on a different path, being a young mother at 22, and ending up a single mother for many years. Doing it all on my own, I felt it was best to put my dream on hold to support my daughter. Then, when my daughter was almost off to college, I was reading one of my favorite magazines and saw a small article about an entrepreneur who was selling handmade purses on Etsy. I thought, "What have I got to lose? If I don't put it out there, no one will see it!" So, I went online, set up my shop and have been loving it ever since. My art is an expression of my passion for beauty. I’m inspired by color, nature and beautiful scenes. I paint mostly in oils because I find I can’t get the texture and depth of colors I’m after with any other medium. But sometimes, I need a break from them and so will do an occasional watercolor or acrylic piece. While studying in school, most of my classes were watercolor classes, so it’s nice to get back to that. I'm always learning and evolving, exploring new things, and I enjoy sharing each new piece with my viewers. The greatest joy is when someone receives their painting and lets me know how much they love it! I love to hear where they will hang their new painting.

What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?
I love to shop online and lately have found Pinterest to be a great resource for finding new things, tips and deals. Also, since I’m an Etsy seller, I see a lot of wonderful shops that advertise specials. Following their shop on Facebook is one of the best ways to see what’s new and what deals they have going on. Occasionally, I offer free shipping on my work, which can be a great discount for some of the larger pieces. I’ll advertise this in my Etsy shop, on my Facebook and on my blog. I also can’t forget to mention blogs as another great place to find deals!

What are some ways that people can still decorate for less?
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to decorate your home. A lot of my best pieces of furniture were hand-me-downs. Nothing matches, but somehow everything fits together in an eclectic way. A great place to find larger pieces at a fraction of the original price is at your local consignment store. A meaningful piece of art to hang on your wall may be an investment, but it will last forever and bring life to any room. Art doesn’t have to be expensive to be good and work in your home. A trip to Etsy’s Art category will direct you to a number of fantastic artists selling their original pieces at half as much as they would be if you bought them in a gallery. This doesn’t mean the quality is anything less than what you might find at a high-end gallery; it just means you are paying the artist, and only the artist. It’s a more intimate relationship, and many times you can actually get to know the artist whose work is hanging on your walls. If you’re not ready to invest in an original piece, many artists offer prints that can be grouped together in clusters and make a big statement.
What is your favorite piece in your shop and why?
I have a hard time choosing a favorite piece in my shop. Every piece I create is a part of me and has come from my inner self. One of my favorites right now is a piece I recently completed of Kapalua in Maui. I have a little obsession with the Hawaiian Islands and the Aloha spirit. This piece speaks of my passion while capturing the essence of this magical place.

In The Pursuit of Happiness: Zooey Deschanel on feminism

Thursday, April 25, 2013

I'd love to know, friends: What does feminism mean to you? There are so many different meanings attached to that one word. But perhaps even more controversial over the years has been the debate on who exactly qualifies as a feminist. In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, everyone's favorite funny girl Zooey Deschanel described what feminism means to her...

I’m just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say. We can’t be feminine and be feminists and be successful? I want to be a f--king feminist and wear a f--king Peter Pan collar. So f--king what?

I've always loved Deschanel's refreshing honesty, and there is so much truth in her quote. Yes, a woman can be a bow-and-glitter loving girly girl and still be a feminist. The two aren't mutually exclusive. The way I see it, it's all about how you carry yourself.

What do you think, friends? Let's chat! xoxo

P.S. I'm loving Deschanel's site HelloGiggles too! :)
